Entries are now open for the East Midlands Beginners and Intermediates (EMBI) and the East Midlands Junior Beginners competitions, both of which are taking place on Saturday 9th November at the Clifton campus of Nottingham Trent University.
The EMBI is a long-running competition which has been many people’s first introduction to competitive fencing. It’s open to all EM fencers aged 13 or older with Starter, Recreational or Compete membership of British Fencing – for the purpose of this competition, you’re a beginner if you’ve been fencing for less than 2 years as of the competition date (unless you won it in 2022 or 2023). Intermediate is open to people who’ve been fencing for any period of time but is based on other criteria (more details at the entry link).

The EM Junior Beginners is aimed at fencers younger than 13, with categories for U11 (8, 9 or 10) and U13 (11 or 12) as of the competition date. This is intended to be a good introduction to competitive fencing, as there will be proper pistes, boxes and referees, but without the elimination aspect to reduce the stress for those competing outside their club for the first time.
